ATPL subject 070
ATPL Operational Procedures: what it covers and how to study it
Operational Procedures (subject 070) covers the day-to-day rules and procedures of airline flying: the operations manual, fuel policy, winter operations, emergencies and the carriage of dangerous goods.
By Matthew Dowell, airline training captain and Chief Flight Instructor. A revision guide, not approved by any regulator. Your training organisation sets the syllabus and exam rules, and regulations always take precedence.
What the Operational Procedures paper covers
- The operations manual and its structure
- Fuel policy and fuel planning
- Winter operations and contaminated runways
- Emergency and abnormal procedures
- Dangerous goods
Where students find it hard
The paper is wide and detailed, and questions ask for exact conditions and limits. Students find it dry because it is a lot of recall, and they can lose marks on details of procedures they have not used in practice.
How to study Operational Procedures
- Group the content by phase of flight so the procedures have a logical order.
- Learn the reason behind each rule, because it is easier to remember than the number alone.
- Test yourself regularly, since this subject rewards repetition.

How this book is organised
The book follows the topics listed above, in turn, starting with the operations manual and its structure; fuel policy and fuel planning; winter operations and contaminated runways, so you can see which part of the paper you are covering at any point. It is a complete revision guide and question bank built on the full published learning objectives for the subject, and it ends with a mock examination weighted as the real one. Work through a section, test yourself on it, and keep the mock examination for the end, under timed conditions.
